Once the proud home of the distinguished Bolton family, the house fell victim to a devastating fire in the 19th century before being demolished in 1978. In this article, we will delve into the rich history of Brazeel House, discussing its architectural features, the influential family that called it home, and its ultimate demise.

The Bolton Family and the Establishment of Brazeel House:

Brazeel House was built by Sir Richard Bolton, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, during the reign of Charles I (circa 1632-1640). The Bolton family was well-known for their contributions to the legal sphere, with many of its members holding esteemed positions. Sir Richard Bolton himself was appointed Lord Chancellor of Ireland under Charles I, a testament to the family’s prominence during this time.

Architectural Features of Brazeel House:

The house was designed with a rectangular plan, rising two storeys high and featuring multiple gables and projecting chimneys. One of these chimneys even housed an oven. The brick chimney stacks boasted arcading and decorative plaster pendants, while the wall masonry was covered externally with thin plaster, lightly rough cast. Quoins and openings were surrounded by finer plaster, with a block and start design.

The multiple gables of Brazeel House had fine brick skewbacks, showcasing the attention to detail and craftsmanship that went into the construction of this historic residence. Its architectural features were indicative of the period in which it was built, reflecting the tastes and preferences of the era.

Destruction and Demise of Brazeel House:

Brazeel House’s decline began with a fire in the 19th century that caused significant damage to the structure. By the time the First Edition OS maps were produced, the house was already labeled as “Brazil house in ruins.” Despite its historical and architectural significance, Brazeel House was ultimately demolished in 1977 with the permission of the Office of Public Works.

Brazeel House was once a grand testament to the architectural prowess and prominence of the Bolton family in Swords, Dublin. Tragically, the ravages of time and disaster led to its eventual destruction in the late 20th century. Today, the story of Brazeel House serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and cherishing our historical and architectural heritage for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
