A landscape of small rounded drumlin hills, Monaghan, Muineachán, was the territory of the MacMahon chiefs, lords of the ancient kingdom of Airgíalla. Crannógs sit in its many small lakes and ringforts crown its low hills — the same quiet countryside that later shaped the poet Patrick Kavanagh.
