Ireland’s finest medieval city, Kilkenny, Cill Chainnigh, rose around the church of St Canice and the great castle of the Butler lords of Ormonde. In 1642 it became the seat of the Confederation of Kilkenny, a short-lived Irish parliament; its narrow medieval lanes and stone buildings have earned it the name “the Marble City”.
