Building, Kelshamore, Co. Wicklow

On a marshy, east-facing slope in Kelshamore, County Wicklow, a low rectangular outline sits quietly in the rocky ground.

It is not much to look at in the conventional sense: an earthen and stone bank, no more than thirty centimetres high and a metre and a half wide, tracing out a roughly nine-by-eight-metre rectangle oriented east to west. What the structure once was, and who built it, remains unresolved. The dimensions and orientation suggest something deliberate and perhaps ecclesiastical, east-west alignment being a common feature of early Christian buildings and enclosures in Ireland, but without excavation, firm conclusions are difficult.

What gives the site a particular quality is its proximity to a cluster of bullaun stones located about a hundred metres to the northeast. Bullauns are boulders or outcrops bearing one or more deliberately hollowed, bowl-shaped depressions, and they appear frequently in association with early medieval religious sites across Ireland. The water that collects in these hollows was often considered to have curative or sacred properties, and many bullauns remained focal points for local devotion long after the formal church structures around them fell into disuse or disappeared entirely. The co-presence of the rectangular structure and the bullauns at Kelshamore hints at a small, localised religious complex, though the precise relationship between the two features is not established.
