Stone circle, Toor, Co. Wicklow

Most stone circles announce themselves with a certain grandeur, but the one at Toor in Co. Wicklow is quietly minimal: just three stones, set into a thin spread of blanket bog on relatively level ground, with nothing much around them to indicate that someone, at some point in prehistory, considered this arrangement worth the effort.

The monument belongs to a category sometimes called a three-stone circle, in which a single upright is placed in deliberate opposition to a pair of stones, a configuration found elsewhere in Ireland and thought to carry some kind of intentional spatial or perhaps astronomical logic. At Toor, the lone stone stands roughly to the south, with a distinctive v-shaped notch worn or shaped into its upper profile, and a long axis running east to west. It measures around 0.9 metres in height and just over a metre and a half in width. Some 2.1 metres to its north-north-east, the opposing pair face it at a spacing of 1.25 metres between them. One of those two stones, the taller of the pair at just over a metre, is oriented roughly north-west to south-east, while its companion runs east to west, echoing the alignment of the lone stone opposite. The three are low and broad rather than tall and dramatic, which may be partly why they sit so easily unnoticed in the bog.

Blanket bog, which forms over time where waterlogged, acidic conditions prevent organic matter from fully decomposing, has a tendency to both preserve and obscure what lies beneath or within it. Whether the ground level around these stones has risen over the millennia, burying any further depth they may have, is difficult to say without excavation. What is visible above the surface is modest enough, but the geometry of the arrangement, that careful opposition of one stone to two, suggests a deliberate design whose full meaning has long since detached itself from the landscape it inhabits.
