Stone circle, Toor, Co. Wicklow

At Toor in County Wicklow, there is a stone circle, and that is almost all that can be said with certainty.

The site exists in the archaeological record on the basis of fieldwork carried out by C. Corlett, but beyond that bare fact, the details remain unrecorded, at least in any publicly available form. Stone circles in Ireland are prehistoric monuments, typically Bronze Age in origin, consisting of standing stones arranged in a rough ring. Their precise purposes are still debated, though alignment with solar or lunar events, and use in ritual or funerary contexts, are among the explanations most commonly advanced. Whether the Toor example is a modest two- or three-stone arc or something more complete is simply not known from what has been made available.

Wicklow is not without prehistoric remains. The uplands in particular carry a considerable density of Bronze Age activity, from cairns and cists to standing stones scattered across the moorland. Toor sits within that broader landscape of early settlement and monument-building, even if this particular circle has not yet attracted the kind of detailed survey that might tell us more about its scale, condition, or orientation. The fact that it was noted during fieldwork suggests it is at least identifiable on the ground, but no dimensions, stone count, or state of preservation have been published alongside the basic record.
