Cross, Sevenchurches, Co. Wicklow

Among the many early medieval remains scattered across the Glendalough valley, one of the quietest is also one of the most easily overlooked: a fragment of a small stone cross, sitting in the stone store of the visitor centre at Sevenchurches.

It measures roughly 40 centimetres by 20 centimetres, and barely three centimetres in thickness, which gives some sense of how slight it is. What makes it curious is its shape. The arms of the cross are described as very short, and the head is oval in outline rather than the more familiar ringed or rectilinear form. It is a fragment, not a complete object, but even whole it would have been a modest thing.
