But tucked away in the stone store adjoining the visitor centre is a much smaller and quieter object: a carved stone cross, modest in scale, that has survived the centuries largely out of public view.

The cross measures just 0.74 metres in height, with a maximum width of 0.32 metres and a shaft 0.08 metres thick, dimensions that place it firmly in the category of free-standing carved stone crosses rather than the grand high crosses more commonly associated with early Irish monasticism. High crosses, which typically combine a ringed head with elaborate scriptural or decorative carving, were statements of prestige and theological intent. This example, by contrast, is spare and relatively unadorned, its compact proportions suggesting either an early date or a more functional, perhaps devotional, purpose within the monastic enclosure. It was recorded in the stone store on 30 August 2005, suggesting it had already been removed from outdoor exposure and placed under shelter, a common precaution for fragile carved stonework vulnerable to weathering and frost damage.

Visitors to Glendalough who make their way to the visitor centre may be able to view the cross in the stone store, though access to stored material of this kind is not always open to the general public without prior arrangement. The cross is easy to overlook precisely because of its size and location, but its survival in relatively complete condition, shaft and head intact, makes it a genuinely interesting fragment of the early medieval landscape that once made this valley one of the most significant ecclesiastical sites in Ireland.
