This is a togher, a type of ancient trackway engineered to carry people across waterlogged ground, and the one at Baunmore in Derryville bog is a particularly direct piece of prehistoric thinking: forty-five metres of longitudinally laid oak, orientated north-east to south-west, aimed with apparent purpose towards Derrygreenagh, a dry island of raised land encircled by bog. The planks, some sections as narrow as thirty centimetres and others broadening to two metres, were supplemented at intervals with brushwood laid in the same direction, forming a surface firm enough to walk on across terrain that would otherwise have been impassable.

The trackway was discovered in 1995 by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit, based at University College Dublin, during a pilot survey of Littleton Works, and was examined more closely during a fieldwalking survey of the Bord na Móna industrial peatlands in 2006. At the time of that later survey it was visible in three places: on the field surface and in the face of a drainage cut on the eastern side of the bog. Radiocarbon work placed its construction to after 1533 BC, placing it in the Bronze Age, a period when bog trackways were being built across Ireland and Britain to connect communities to seasonal grazing, resources, or simply to one another across landscapes that expanded and contracted with rainfall and seasonal flooding. The destination here, Derrygreenagh, would have been a usable pocket of dry ground in a world where the surrounding bog was both obstacle and resource.
