Measuring roughly 66 metres north to south and 80 metres east to west, it is enclosed by an earthen bank and an external fosse, which is the ditch dug outside a bank or wall to reinforce a boundary or defensive line. What makes it strange is the combination of features: four separate entrances, one on each side, and a regularity of form that sits oddly against the irregular patchwork of ordinary agricultural fields surrounding it. Hilltop locations of this kind also tend to suggest something more deliberate than simple land division, given the effort required to build on exposed high ground and the commanding views the site affords over the valleys in every direction.

The Ordnance Survey mapped it in 1839 and again in the 1900 revision, both times recording it simply as a rectangular field. That official indifference has left the question of its origin unresolved. The earthen bank survives to an internal height of between 0.6 and 0.8 metres, rising to between 1.2 and 2 metres on the exterior, with the fosse reaching its greatest depth on the eastern side, where it drops to around 1.3 metres. These are not the dimensions of a casual field boundary. Whether it served a defensive, ceremonial, or agricultural function at some earlier period remains unclear, and no dates have been firmly attached to its construction. It may genuinely be a field enclosure, but the geometry, the elevated position, and the deliberate provision of four entrances make that ordinary explanation feel incomplete.
