Enclosure, Tubbrid, Co. Kilkenny

On the south-western slope of a low hill in County Kilkenny, a circular enclosure roughly twenty metres across once marked the landscape clearly enough to be recorded by Ordnance Survey cartographers in 1839.

By the time those same surveyors returned to revise their maps in 1900, it was gone. No mound, no ditch, no trace visible at ground level today. The only evidence that it ever existed is its presence on that first edition six-inch map and its absence from the second.

Circular enclosures of this kind are among the most common archaeological features in the Irish countryside. They could serve many purposes, from a ringfort enclosing a farmstead to a burial ground or ceremonial space, and their earthen banks were always vulnerable to agricultural clearance. What makes Tubbrid quietly striking is not the single lost enclosure but the cluster around it. At least four others were mapped in the same period, sitting within 250 metres of one another on this same stretch of rolling reclaimed pasture. All of them appear on the 1839 survey. None survived to the 1900 revision. The implication is that sometime in those six decades, a systematic levelling took place across the whole area, most likely as land was brought more intensively into cultivation during or after the upheavals of the mid-nineteenth century. A small hillside in Kilkenny effectively lost its entire visible archaeological record within a couple of generations.

There is nothing to see at the site now, and that is rather the point. The field sits on the south-western side of its hill with good views across the valley below, the kind of position that would have made it a useful and significant place in earlier centuries. Standing there, the land looks entirely ordinary, which is precisely what makes the first edition map, with its neat circular outline, feel like a document of a quiet erasure.
