Enclosure, Rathduff, Co. Kilkenny

In the townland of Rathduff in County Kilkenny, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and classified but largely unspoken for.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood monument types in Ireland, ranging from early medieval ringforts, which served as farmsteads defended by an earthen bank and ditch, to prehistoric ceremonial sites or later stock enclosures. The category is deliberately broad, which is part of what makes any individual example quietly compelling: the label tells you a boundary once existed, but not always why, or for whom, or for how long.
