Enclosure, Connahy, Co. Kilkenny

Beneath the fields of Connahy in County Kilkenny, a cluster of ancient earthworks has spent centuries hiding in plain sight, invisible at ground level but legible, briefly and seasonally, from the air.

It was an aerial photograph taken in July 1989 that first brought this landscape into focus, capturing a series of cropmarks, the ghostly outlines that appear in dry summers when buried ditches and features affect the growth of crops above them, betraying the shapes of structures long since levelled.

What the photograph revealed was a small, incomplete enclosure defined by a fosse, which is a defensive or boundary ditch, along with faint traces of a conjoined curvilinear enclosure nearby. Tucked within that second enclosure is a small ring-ditch, a circular trench that in Irish archaeology often indicates a prehistoric burial monument. The site does not stand alone. Roughly 100 metres to the north lies another enclosure, and scattered across the immediate vicinity are at least five further ring-ditches and the remains of a field system, all identified from the same kind of cropmark evidence. The cumulative picture is of a landscape that was once extensively settled and organised, with boundaries, enclosures, and burials laid out across ground that now shows no surface trace of any of it.

Because everything here exists only as a cropmark, there is nothing visible to a visitor walking the fields today. The site is agricultural land, and the features that defined this place are perceptible only under specific conditions of drought and from altitude. The value of Connahy lies not in what can be seen on foot, but in what it represents: a reminder that the apparent blankness of a farmed field can conceal a dense and layered past.
