Ringfort (Rath), Acres, Co. Kerry

The Irish name for this ringfort near Acres in County Kerry is Lissamogha, a rendering of Lios an Mhacha, meaning the ringfort of the milking-place.

That small detail of language carries a lot of weight. Whoever built and used this enclosure was not marking a chieftain's seat or a place of ceremony, at least not primarily; they were, in some routine and agricultural way, keeping cattle and managing a farm. The site sits with a commanding view of the surrounding land and of the Shannon estuary to the north, which would have made it practical for watching over livestock and equally useful for watching out for whoever might be coming across that broad waterway.

A ringfort, or rath, is an earthen enclosure typically dating from the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth century, constructed by encircling a domestic or farming space with a raised bank and an outer ditch. Lissamogha is a univallate example, meaning it has a single enclosing bank rather than the multiple concentric rings found at more elaborate or higher-status sites. The interior measures twenty-seven metres across in both directions, making it a fairly typical size. The earthen bank varies between three and six metres wide at its base, and survives to different heights around the circuit; to the north-west and west it has been reduced to a low platform rising about 1.2 metres above the surrounding ground, while the eastern side remains the best-preserved section, standing 1.8 metres above the interior. A shallow fosse, the outer ditch that would have complemented the bank's defensive or enclosing function, runs from the north around through the east to the south, measuring roughly two metres wide and half a metre deep. Two gaps in the bank, one at the north-east measuring six metres and one at the south-east measuring four metres, are thought to be later interventions rather than original entrances.
