The example at Glouria in north County Kerry is a rath, the term used for an earthen ringfort of the kind that served as a farmstead enclosure during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. What makes any individual rath worth pausing over is the quiet legibility of it: you are looking at the footprint of a household, a defended domestic space whose proportions were determined by practical necessity rather than any grand design.

At Glouria, the enclosed area measures 26 metres across in both directions, making it a near-perfect circle. It sits on gently sloping pastureland with open views in all directions, which would have suited an early farming family keeping watch over livestock and land. The enclosing earthen bank still stands to an external height of up to 2.4 metres in places, and around a metre above the interior ground level, with a base width averaging 5 metres. Outside the bank runs a fosse, which is a flat-bottomed ditch, between roughly 1.4 and 2.4 metres wide and approximately a metre deep. The fosse is less distinct along the northern to north-western arc, where it has either eroded or was never fully completed. Three gaps break the circuit of the bank, one to the south, one to the east, and a wider one to the north-west, measuring 3 metres, 3 metres, and 4.6 metres respectively. These were almost certainly original entrances rather than later breaches, and the widest of them, to the north-west, may have served as the principal access point. The interior sits at a slightly elevated level relative to the surrounding ground, a feature common to raths and one that would have helped with drainage as much as with visibility.
