In Leagh, County Kerry, there is a site where a rath once stood, a rath being a circular earthen enclosure of the kind built across Ireland throughout the early medieval period, typically serving as a defended farmstead. Nothing of it remains visible today, yet its outline has been recorded more than once, across different centuries and different technologies, each time by a different kind of seeing.

Ordnance Survey mapmakers noted a circular enclosure here during the 1841 to 1842 surveys, and again when the area was remapped between 1915 and 1916. That the feature still warranted marking on the later map suggests something was legible on the ground at that point, even if reduced. By 1977, when the Geological Survey of Ireland flew aerial photography over the region, the enclosure had lost whatever physical trace it once carried, but the earth remembered it differently. A crop mark appeared, the kind of subtle discolouration that shows up in growing vegetation when buried features alter the moisture or nutrients in the soil beneath. The circular outline of the old rath ghosted back into visibility from the air, recorded in C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995. Since then, nothing.

What is left now is essentially a coordinate and a history of detection. The site is one of those places where the archaeology exists almost entirely in the archive rather than in the field, its interest residing less in what a visitor could see than in the quiet fact that something once stood here, was quietly forgotten, and was found again, twice over, before disappearing for good.
