Toberreendoney, Gortdromagownagh, Co. Kerry

At the bottom of a field in Gortdromagownagh, North Kerry, a small pool sits in a sunken hollow, enclosed by trees and a low ditch.

It does not look like much. But this is Tobar Rí an Domhnaigh, the well of the king of Sunday, and people have been walking circuits around it, saying rosaries, and leaving strips of cloth on the surrounding branches for generations. According to one recorded tradition, it can cure any disease; a more specific and persistent belief holds that it is particularly good for ailments of the eyes.

The well appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1841 to 42 and again on the 1939 edition, which at least confirms its long-standing presence in local geography. A 1943 survey described the typical pattern of devotion: visitors would complete three rosaries while walking around the well, a ritual known as "paying the rounds," a holy well, and leave offerings of cloth and religious objects on the trees once finished. The rounds were held every Sunday, especially through May, with the 15th of August also cited as a significant date, associated with a pattern day, the traditional Irish term for a communal gathering at a sacred site on a saint's feast day, at Knockanure cross nearby. The well's Irish name has also been recorded locally as Tobar Dominae, suggesting some uncertainty or fluidity in how the name was transmitted and understood over time. Underpinning all of this is a cautionary legend: the well originally lay on the lands of the Woulfe family, until a woman of that household, dismissing the old customs, washed clothes in it. The following morning, the well had relocated itself to the adjoining land. The Woulfe family, folklore notes, has suffered a run of ill luck ever since.

Visitors approaching in May will find the site much as the 1943 description left it, a spring pool within a ring of trees, with offerings occasionally visible on the branches. The rounds, if they continue, follow the old pattern of walking the perimeter while reciting prayers.
