Ringfort (Rath), Lissodeige, Co. Kerry

At Lissodeige in County Kerry, somewhere in the folds of the landscape, there sits a rath, a ringfort of the kind that once served as a farmstead and family enclosure for early medieval Irish households.

Ireland has somewhere in the region of forty to fifty thousand ringforts recorded across the island, making them the single most common monument type in the country, yet familiarity has done little to diminish how quietly strange it is to encounter one. These were not military fortifications in any grand sense. A rath typically consists of one or more earthen banks and ditches arranged in a rough circle, enclosing a space where a farming family would have lived, kept livestock, and gone about their days somewhere between the fifth and twelfth centuries. The place name Lissodeige offers its own small clue: lios, the Irish word for a ringfort enclosure, embedded directly into the townland name itself, suggesting the monument was significant enough to define the place long after it fell out of use.

Beyond the place name and the monument type, the documentary record for this particular site is thin. What can be said with confidence is that ringforts in Kerry exist across a wide range of conditions, some reduced to faint cropmarks visible only from the air, others still presenting as substantial earthworks with legible banks and interior hollows. The Kerry landscape, with its mix of upland grazing and coastal lowland, preserves a considerable number of these sites, partly because the land was never heavily industrialised and partly because local tradition long discouraged interfering with what were commonly called fairy forts. That protective folklore, whatever its origins, has kept many a rath from the plough.
