Barrow (Ring Barrow), Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry

In a waterlogged field at the foot of a south-facing slope near Ballymacelligott, something circular lies quietly in the grass.

It does not announce itself the way an upstanding monument might; there is no mound breaking the skyline, no carved stone to draw the eye. What marks this place out is a pattern of concentric earthworks pressed almost flat by time and poor drainage, the kind of feature that becomes legible only from above.

The Castleisland District Archaeological Survey identified the site as a possible ring-barrow, a type of prehistoric funerary monument typically consisting of a low central mound or platform enclosed by a circular ditch and bank. This example is a substantial one. The overall dimensions run to roughly 35 metres north to south and 37.5 metres east to west, while the inner area defined by the fosse, bank, external fosse, and a possible outer bank measures approximately 25.9 by 27.5 metres. That layering of enclosing elements, a ditch, then a bank, then another ditch, then perhaps a further bank beyond that, suggests a monument that was carefully and deliberately constructed, even if what survives today reads more as a series of faint undulations than a recognisable burial site. The outline remained clear enough to be picked up in Digital Globe satellite imagery captured between 2011 and 2013, which is often how such low-lying earthworks first attract fresh attention in the modern era.
