Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, are circular enclosures defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and they represent the most common monument type surviving in the Irish countryside. Built mainly during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, they served as enclosed farmsteads for families of varying status, the scale and number of their banks offering a rough guide to the wealth or rank of the people who built them.
