Ringfort (Rath), Cnoc An Bhróigín Thiar, Co. Kerry

On the southern slopes of Knockavrogeen, on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, sits a ringfort that has been slowly absorbed into the working landscape around it.

A rath, as these early medieval enclosures are known, was typically a circular earthen bank enclosing a farmstead or high-status dwelling, and this one follows that general form while deviating from it in telling ways. The western section of the bank bows inward, as if something has pressed against it from outside over many centuries, and along the northern and eastern sides the original earthwork has been quietly repurposed as a field boundary, now a patchwork of drystone walling, plain earthen bank, and bank faced with drystone masonry. The fosse, a defensive ditch running outside the bank, survives only on the east and north sides, reaching about a metre deep and nearly three metres wide.

What makes the site quietly interesting is the evidence of deliberate construction on difficult ground. Because the rath sits on a slope, its builders cut and levelled a platform to create a flat interior, roughly 24 metres across at its widest north-to-south. The bank that encloses this platform stands up to 2.9 metres high on the interior side, though that height diminishes considerably along the southern, downhill arc where the slope does some of the work. The only feature now visible inside is a large mound of loose stones, most likely the accumulated result of farmers clearing the interior over generations rather than any original structure. The site was documented by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula Archaeological Survey, which recorded it among the dense concentration of early monuments across the Corca Dhuibhne landscape.
