In the rough mountain pasture of Baile Uí Shé, on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, there is a circle of collapsed stone that was once a dwelling.
The hut was built in the drystone tradition, meaning no mortar was used, each stone relying on its neighbours for stability, and it measured roughly four metres across. That is a small space by any standard, barely enough for a person to sleep, store a few tools, and shelter from the Atlantic weather coming off the Blasket Sound. What remains today is largely a low mound, the walls long since fallen inward, the shape still readable but only just.
