Ringfort (Rath), Oileán An Phocáin, Co. Kerry

On a northwest-facing slope on the Dingle Peninsula, a circular earthwork sits quietly in well-drained pastureland, its banks worn low by centuries of weathering and agricultural use.

This is a univallate rath, meaning a ringfort enclosed by a single bank and ditch, a form of settlement that was widespread in early medieval Ireland and typically served as a farmstead for a family of some local standing. What makes this particular example quietly interesting is the way it has been absorbed into the working landscape around it, its northwestern bank repurposed as part of a field boundary running northeast to southwest, a line that has since fallen out of use but left the earthwork partially preserved in a way the rest of it is not.

The rath has an internal diameter of 19 metres and retains an enclosing bank that now stands no higher than 0.75 metres on its interior face and just over a metre on the eastern exterior. The bank is roughly 2 metres wide. An external fosse, the shallow defensive ditch that would originally have run around the outside of the enclosure, survives along the eastern and southern sectors, measuring 2.5 metres wide and a metre deep, though it is absent elsewhere. The northwest section, incorporated into that old field fence, is the best-preserved stretch and is faced on its outer side with drystone walling. The site overlooks the glen through which runs a tributary of the Owenalondrig river, a modest but telling detail; early ringfort builders consistently favoured elevated, well-drained ground with visibility over the surrounding terrain. This description was first recorded by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, a foundational document for understanding the density and variety of early settlement across this part of Kerry.
