Fulacht fia, Ranaleen, Co. Kerry

Scattered across the Irish countryside in their thousands, fulachtaí fia are among the most common yet least understood monuments in the archaeological record.

The one at Ranaleen, in County Kerry, is a quiet example of a type that appears so frequently it risks being taken for granted. A fulacht fia typically survives as a horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stone beside a stream or boggy hollow, the remnant of a Bronze Age cooking method in which water was heated by dropping stones that had been superheated in a fire directly into a trough. The stones crack and fracture with repeated use, and over time the discarded fragments accumulate into the distinctive mound that archaeologists find today.

The technology is simple and effective. Experiments have shown that a trough of water can be brought to the boil within minutes using this method, and that a substantial joint of meat can be cooked within a few hours. Whether these sites were primarily used for cooking, bathing, textile processing, or some combination of purposes is still debated among archaeologists. Most date to the Bronze Age, broadly speaking the period between around 2000 and 500 BC, though some were in use into the early medieval period. Kerry has a particularly dense concentration of them, a reflection both of the county's relatively undisturbed bogland and of the intensive field survey work carried out there over recent decades. The Ranaleen example sits within that broader Kerry landscape, a modest mound of cracked and blackened stone marking a place where people lit fires and boiled water in a manner that left almost no written trace, only the stones themselves.
