The feature in question is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in great numbers across Ireland. The typical form involves a trough filled with water, heated by dropping fire-cracked stones into it, with the spent stones building up over time into a characteristic horseshoe-shaped mound. They are ancient, often dating to the Bronze Age, and they turn up in boggy ground and pasture fields with enough regularity that they have become one of the more familiar markers of early settlement in the Irish landscape.

What gives this particular example its slightly puzzling quality is the sequence of events surrounding it. The burnt material associated with the site was observed in 1986 during the Castleisland District Archaeological Survey, recorded within or beside a rath, the kind of enclosed farmstead defined by an earthen bank that was common from the Iron Age through the early medieval period. Raths and fulachta fia occasionally occur in proximity, though the relationship between them is not always straightforward. When surveyors returned to the same ground in 2002 for a follow-up inspection, they could no longer locate the burnt material. Whether it had been disturbed, obscured by vegetation, or simply proved harder to identify without the conditions of that first visit, the record does not say. The site sits in pasture, grazed and unremarkable to a passing eye, with an open northward view across the plain toward Farranfore.
