This is the rath at Ballymacprior, known locally by the Irish name Lismoyle or Lios Maol, a ringfort of the kind that would once have enclosed a farmstead or the home of a minor lord during the early medieval period. Raths are enclosures formed by earthen banks, occasionally reinforced with stone, and they are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland. What draws the eye here is the subtlety of the survival: the bank still rises to 1.6 metres on its western side, and the gap of roughly a metre in the south-western section of the enclosure may well be the original entrance, the same gap through which people and cattle passed perhaps a thousand or more years ago.

The enclosing bank measures about 1.75 metres wide and drops 1.15 metres down to the interior, which spans roughly 31.5 metres north to south and 23.2 metres east to west, an oval of ground large enough to have sheltered a small household and its animals. Large stones are visible at the base of the bank, suggesting that rubble or field clearance was incorporated into its construction. A later field boundary has been laid directly over the top of the bank at some point, evidence of the way agricultural land was constantly reworked across centuries, with earlier features pressed into service as convenient markers or simply buried beneath newer ones. The site sits in the north-western corner of an undulating field, and the proximity of the Laune river bend would have made this a practical location, close to water and likely to good grazing land.
