That word, modest and functional in the language of archaeology, covers a broad range of structures, from the earthen ringforts that once defined early medieval farmsteads across Ireland to later enclosures associated with ecclesiastical sites, burial grounds, or land management. What makes an enclosure worth recording is that something deliberate happened there: people defined a boundary, marked off a space from the surrounding landscape, and in doing so left a trace that has lasted long enough to be catalogued. The one at Kilderry has been catalogued, but little else about it is currently in the public record.
