Ringfort (Rath), Racomane, Co. Kerry

On a north-facing slope in County Kerry, a ringfort announces itself not with earthworks or stonework but with flowers.

Walk the pasture above the Rathcomane-Dromdoon Beg road in summer and you may notice nothing unusual at all, until the grass gives way to a rough circle of buttercups, tracing the buried outline of what was once an enclosed settlement.

A rath is a type of ringfort, typically an earthen bank and ditch enclosing a farmstead of the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1100 AD. Thousands survive across Ireland in various states of preservation, but this one has effectively retreated below the surface. The 1846 Ordnance Survey six-inch map records a circular enclosure roughly 40 metres in diameter at this location, and by the 1894 revision the same feature appears as a subcircular enclosure of around 30 metres, open to the north-east and defined by a single line. Whether the difference reflects real deterioration over those decades or simply a change in how the surveyors interpreted what they saw is difficult to say. What is clear is that by the time anyone looked closely on the ground, the monument had become effectively invisible. The landowner's observation that buttercups reliably mark the circle each summer suggests that the buried banks or disturbed soil beneath still influence what grows above them, a phenomenon sometimes called a crop or vegetation mark, where variations in soil depth and moisture produce differential plant growth that outlines features long since levelled.
