At Knockeenduff in County Kerry, a ringfort, or rath, a type of enclosed farmstead typically built during the early medieval period, survives only as an arc along a west-facing slope, its southwestern edge severed long ago by a field boundary and the lane that still runs alongside it. What remains is roughly 30 metres of low earthen bank, no more than 40 centimetres high on the outside, with a shallow external fosse, essentially a drainage ditch, running along its outer edge. Rushes have colonised the interior, suggesting the ground holds moisture. The trees that now crowd the slope limit any view westward, though the hillside position implies the original enclosure would have looked out across open ground.

The site is most legible not from the ground but from above. An aerial photograph shows the full ghost of the original circular form as a shadow site, where buried or flattened features leave faint traces in the growth and colour of vegetation or soil. From that vantage point the lane's intrusion into the southwestern quadrant becomes clear, as does the relationship between the surviving bank and the linear field boundary it now abuts along its eastern side. Approximately 40 metres to the east lies a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site typically identified by a mound of fire-cracked stone, often associated with water troughs and communal or ritual use. The two sites are distinct in period and function, the rath being early medieval, the fulacht fia likely prehistoric, but their proximity on the same slope is a reminder of how repeatedly the same patches of usable ground were chosen across the centuries.
