Enclosure, Cooleanig, Co. Kerry

Enclosures
On a gentle rise above the Gaddagh river in County Kerry, there is a place that exists now only on paper.
A circular enclosure, the kind of roughly ringwork feature that appears at hundreds of sites across Ireland, typically a defined area enclosed by an earthen bank or stone wall and associated with early medieval settlement or land use, was recorded at this spot on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map. Whoever drew that map saw something there. Nobody alive today has.
