Burnt spread, Farranaspig, Co. Kerry

In a field at Farranaspig in County Kerry, beneath long grass and creeping overgrowth, lies a patch of burnt material roughly fifteen metres across.

It sits quietly on a gentle north-east-facing slope in ordinary pasture, easy to walk past without a second thought. What makes it worth pausing over is what it likely represents: a fulacht fiadh, or burnt mound, one of the most common yet least understood monument types in the Irish landscape. These sites, found in their thousands across Ireland, consist of the accumulated debris from repeated episodes of fire and water, typically mounds of heat-shattered stone and charcoal that built up over centuries of use. The prevailing theory is that they served as cooking sites, where stones were heated in fire and dropped into water-filled troughs to bring them to the boil, though some archaeologists have proposed other uses, from brewing to bathing.

What gives this particular spot an added layer of quiet interest is that it is not alone. A second burnt spread lies roughly ten metres to the south-south-west, suggesting that this corner of Farranaspig saw repeated or clustered activity, possibly across different periods or by different groups making use of the same favourable ground. The north-east-facing slope and proximity to what would presumably have been a reliable water source fit the typical pattern of such sites, which tend to cluster near streams or boggy ground. The partial covering by overgrowth is itself informative, a reminder of how much of the archaeological record persists not in dramatic ruins but in subtle changes in vegetation and soil that only become legible when someone looks carefully.
