Ringfort (Rath), Farranaspig, Co. Kerry

Some of Ireland's most significant archaeological sites are entirely invisible to anyone standing in the field above them.

In Farranaspig, County Kerry, a possible early medieval ringfort occupies a level stretch of a north-facing slope, sitting in what is now ordinary pasture with nothing on the surface to mark it out. The only evidence for its existence came from the sky, when an aerial photograph taken in 1989 caught something the grass had quietly concealed.

A rath, to use the Irish term, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and an external ditch, known as a fosse, typically dating from the early medieval period and associated with farmsteads or settlement sites. In this case, the photograph, taken as part of the Ordnance Survey aerial programme, revealed the circular outline as a cropmark, a phenomenon where buried features cause differential growth in the vegetation above them, making the underlying ditches and banks faintly legible from altitude. The enclosure measures approximately twenty-five metres in diameter, with the fosse and outer bank visible around most of the circuit. Along the eastern arc, however, both features become less clearly defined, which may reflect variations in soil depth, subsequent disturbance, or simply the limits of what the cropmark could express. Whether the site is a genuine rath or something else entirely remains uncertain; the word "possible" is doing quiet but significant work in any description of it.
