Settlement Sites
On a hillside in south-west Kerry, at a place called Knockaneyouloo, the remains of an ancient hut sit quietly in the landscape, one of a pair of subcircular structures whose full story remains only partially told.
Subcircular huts of this kind are among the more common but least celebrated survivals of early Irish settlement, typically built from dry-stone walling and used as shelters or dwellings by farming communities across many centuries. What makes this particular site quietly interesting is the pairing: two huts, positioned in relation to one another, with the one recorded here lying to the south-south-east of its companion.
