On the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, a shallow circular depression in the ground carries a local reputation that far exceeds its modest appearance.
It is said to be the entrance to a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber of the kind commonly built during the early medieval period in Ireland, typically used for storage, refuge, or both. The depression sits in the centre of a floor, which suggests it marks the original opening into whatever lies, or once lay, beneath.
