Children’s burial ground, Formaoil, Co. Kerry

On a north-facing slope of pasture at Formaoil in County Kerry, a small raised enclosure sits unmarked on any Ordnance Survey map.

Locally, it is known as a children's burial ground, one of hundreds of such sites scattered across Ireland that were used for the interment of unbaptised infants. Known in Irish tradition as cillíní, these were liminal spaces, neither fully sacred nor fully profane, where children who had died before baptism could be laid to rest outside the bounds of consecrated ground. What makes this particular site quietly unusual is what the ground itself suggests about its earlier life.

The enclosure is roughly circular, measuring 6.7 metres north to south and 6.3 metres east to west, and it rises about a quarter of a metre above the surrounding pasture. Its perimeter is defined by a number of large slabs set on edge, giving it a deliberate, constructed character. Archaeologists who surveyed the Iveragh Peninsula in the 1990s noted that the site may originally have been a circular hut, meaning the burial ground likely appropriated an older structure entirely. This kind of reuse is not unusual in Irish archaeology; early medieval and prehistoric features were frequently pressed into secondary purposes by later communities who may or may not have understood what they were building upon. The slight elevation and the edge-set slabs would have given the original structure a recognisable form on the landscape, and that visibility may well be what drew later generations to treat it as a meaningful, bounded place.
