Hut site, Maulnagower, Co. Kerry

In the forestry around Maulnagower in south Kerry, a small structure sits on the map without quite existing in the world.

Recorded as a hut site, the feature was noted by surveyors and then, when someone went looking, simply could not be found.

The Ordnance Survey's second edition mapped the site not as a hut but as a sheepfold, which tells its own quiet story. The two categories, hut site and sheepfold, are not always easy to separate on the ground. Dry-stone enclosures built to shelter animals and those built to shelter people can look nearly identical after a century or two of collapse and overgrowth, and the OS mapmakers of the nineteenth century were making their best judgements from what they could see. By the time archaeologists working on the Iveragh peninsula came to assess the site in the 1990s, the forestry had apparently swallowed whatever remained. The survey, published by Cork University Press in 1996, recorded the location but was unable to place anything physical at it.

There is something fitting about a site like this on the Iveragh peninsula, a landscape that holds an unusual density of early remains, from ring forts to clochans, the small dry-stone beehive cells associated with early Christian and later pastoral life. Whether this particular feature was ever a dwelling, a seasonal shelter, or purely a fold for livestock is a question the ground is no longer answering.
