Enclosure, Drimna More, Co. Kerry

On the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, a large oval enclosure once marked the landscape clearly enough to be recorded on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map.

Today, that enclosure has all but vanished, swallowed by the kind of quiet agricultural reorganisation that erased so many such features across rural Ireland. In its place, a patchwork of small, irregularly shaped fields now occupies the site, their irregular outlines possibly a faint echo of whatever came before. The only physical survivor appears to be a short, curving bank in what would have been the north-eastern sector of the original enclosure, a modest earthen ridge just 5.5 metres long, 1.4 metres wide, and 0.45 metres high, and densely overgrown at that.

Enclosures of this kind, typically circular or oval earthen boundaries surrounding a settlement or farmstead, are a familiar feature of the Irish archaeological landscape, often associated with the early medieval period though some have earlier origins. They functioned as defined domestic or agricultural spaces, their banks marking territory, providing some shelter, and perhaps keeping livestock in or out. The Drimna More example is known primarily through cartographic evidence rather than excavation, its oval form visible on the first edition OS map before subsequent land division reduced it to near-invisibility. The contrast between the two editions of the map is itself telling: the shift from a single large enclosure to multiple small fields reflects the kind of land restructuring common across nineteenth-century Kerry, whether driven by inheritance patterns, post-Famine reorganisation, or simply the slow drift of practical farming. The surviving bank, earthen in composition and barely knee-height, is all that physically remains of what was once a substantial feature in this part of the Iveragh Peninsula.
