Enclosure, Erneen, Co. Kerry

In a field in Erneen, in the far south-west of Kerry, a collapsed drystone wall traces an unusual D-shape across the ground.

The straight southern side runs for about 70 metres; the curved portion completes the form, enclosing a space roughly 33 metres from north to south. The wall itself is only partially visible now, mostly grass-covered and reduced to a thickness of around 0.9 metres and a height of 0.6 metres, but its geometry is still legible in the landscape if you know what you are looking for.

What makes this enclosure particularly striking is not the boundary itself but what sits within and immediately around it. At least fourteen separate hut sites have been recorded in or adjacent to the enclosed area, suggesting this was once a place of considerable, organised habitation. Drystone enclosures of this kind were built without mortar, relying entirely on the careful arrangement of stone, and they were used across many centuries in early Irish and pre-Norman settlement. The enclosure at Erneen sits within a wider field system, with a further field wall surviving approximately 100 metres to the north, hinting at a broader pattern of land management that once structured this part of the Kerry landscape. The combination of so many hut sites concentrated within a single enclosure is relatively uncommon and points to a settlement of some density, though when it was occupied and by whom remains unspecified in the surviving record.

The linear southern wall is the best-preserved section and the most immediately readable on the ground. Visitors approaching the site would be moving through what was itself an organised agricultural landscape, and the enclosure should be understood as one element within that larger, now largely invisible, system.
