Children’s burial ground, An Fearann Iarthach, Co. Kerry

On a flat terrace above Darrynane Harbour in south Kerry, a small enclosure sits quietly in the landscape, its purpose encoded in its Irish name and in the particular sadness that clings to places like it.

This is a cillín, an unofficial burial ground used for centuries to inter unbaptised infants, those whom Church law excluded from consecrated ground. Such sites are found across Ireland, often in marginal or liminal locations, tucked into field corners, beside ringforts, or on elevated ground near the sea.

The enclosure is roughly subcircular, measuring about 16.4 metres north to south and 17 metres east to west, enclosed by a wall that is substantially collapsed and overgrown on its northern side but survives elsewhere to a width of around 1.5 metres. Where intact, the wall shows careful construction: upright slabs facing the interior, with horizontally coursed block-like slabs on the outer face. A narrow entrance, less than a metre wide, opens to the east, framed on either side by two substantial standing slabs. In the southern half of the enclosed area, loose slabs and low stone mounds remain; the northern half appears to have been cleared at some point, leaving no obvious surface evidence of burial.

The site overlooks Darrynane Harbour, and the choice of a terrace with a southward prospect is not unusual for these places, which were often sited with care despite their unofficial status. The mounds of stone in the southern portion are likely the only visible markers of the burials beneath, informal and unlettered, as was common practice. The denuded state of the wall and the cleared northern ground suggest the site has seen some disturbance over time, though whether through agricultural activity, stone robbing, or something else is not recorded.
