Hut site, Cill Mhic Iarainn Thiar, Co. Kerry

On the western reaches of the Iveragh Peninsula in south-west Kerry, in the townland of Cill Mhic Iarainn Thiar, there survives what archaeologists cautiously describe as one of two possible hut sites.

The hedged language is telling. These are the kinds of low, ambiguous earthworks that can easily be walked past without a second glance, their outlines worn down by centuries of grazing and weather until they sit at the uncertain boundary between built structure and natural feature.
