Kerb circle, Derreenauliff, Co. Kerry
Co. Kerry |
Ritual/Ceremonial
On the Iveragh Peninsula in south-west Kerry, at a townland called Derreenauliff, there survives a kerb circle, a type of prehistoric monument that tends to attract less attention than its more celebrated cousins, the stone circles and megalithic tombs scattered across the same landscape.
A kerb circle consists of a ring of contiguous or closely set stones set edge-to-edge at ground level, typically enclosing a low cairn or earthen mound, and is generally associated with Bronze Age funerary practice. The form is modest almost by design, easy to miss in rough pasture or heather, which may explain why examples like this one remain so little discussed outside specialist literature.
