Hut site, Bunbinnia, Co. Kerry

On the Iveragh Peninsula in south Kerry, three small drystone huts sit pressed together on the landscape, linked by a narrow communicating passage and joined in a cluster that suggests something more deliberate than simple shelter.

Drystone construction, as the name implies, uses no mortar; stones are stacked and interlocked by hand, relying on careful placement rather than binding material to hold their shape. These three structures have held their shape, after a fashion, for long enough that their original entrance features have entirely disappeared.

The cluster is arranged from west to east, each hut slightly smaller than the last. The westernmost is the largest, roughly oval in plan, measuring about five metres by just under five metres, with walls surviving to a height of around 1.1 metres and a thickness of roughly 0.9 metres. Beside it, the middle hut is noticeably narrower, only about 4.4 metres by 2.4 metres, and lower, its walls standing to 0.6 metres. A passage 0.6 metres wide connects it to the eastern hut, the smallest of the three, an approximate circle no more than three metres across. The arrangement, three conjoined spaces linked by that slender internal corridor, raises questions that the stones themselves cannot answer. Whether this was a single-household complex, a structure that grew incrementally over time, or something built all at once for a specific set of purposes is not clear. What is clear is that someone found reason to build not one hut but three, and to connect them. The site sits about 100 metres to the north-east of a neighbouring recorded monument, suggesting this part of Bunbinnia was, at some point, a place where people lived and organised their immediate world with some care.
