Grave yard, Farranreagh, Co. Kerry

At Farranreagh in County Kerry, a graveyard wraps around a church that was built in 1815, placing it in the post-Penal era when Catholic communities across Ireland were beginning to construct permanent places of worship more openly.

The relationship between church and burial ground here is a familiar one in the Irish landscape, where the dead and the living congregation have long shared the same enclosure, the graves pressing close to the walls as generations accumulated around the building.
