No mound, no hollow, no visible outline in the ground. What is recorded here is a fulacht fia, a type of prehistoric cooking site found in considerable numbers across Ireland, typically consisting of a horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stone beside a trough that would once have been filled with water and heated by dropping stones from a fire directly into it. At Cloonydonigan, even that characteristic mound has been swallowed by tree cover and flattened, leaving nothing perceptible on the surface.

The site came to official attention in 2000, when Michael Connolly, County Archaeologist for Kerry County Council, identified it during a systematic assessment of a forty square mile area north of Killarney. The survey had a practical purpose, examining the landscape for the planning of a road route, but it produced archaeological findings along the way, and this potential fulacht fia was among them. Connolly recorded it as an extant site. Subsequent checks against historic mapping and aerial photography, including imagery from 2010 and 2015, revealed no trace of the feature from above. The deciduous plantation that covered it at the time of discovery had, by those later dates, been replaced by or grown into forestry, further obscuring whatever may lie beneath.

What makes this particular record quietly interesting is the gap between its official status and its physical reality. It sits in the inventory as a known site, yet there is nothing a visitor could point to, no crop mark from the air, no earthwork, no exposed stonework. The landscape has closed over it entirely.
