Hut site, Baile Ristín, Co. Kerry

On the eastern slopes of the Garfinny valley in Co. Kerry, a cluster of low stone foundations sits on a series of small grassy terraces, easy to overlook and easier still to misread.

What at first might look like collapsed field boundaries resolves, on closer inspection, into the remains of four drystone huts and two sheep-folds, huddled together in a way that suggests a working landscape rather than a place of permanent habitation. One of the structures has an entrance so low, its lintelled threshold barely eighty centimetres high, that no adult could have passed through it upright. It was built, apparently, to admit sheep.

The four huts vary considerably in form and quality. The first is a small circular corbelled structure, corbelling being a technique where stones are layered inward and upward without mortar until they meet overhead to form a roof, though here the construction is noted as poor. The second is D-shaped, its straight southeastern wall formed not from laid stone but from a natural rock outcrop pressed into service as a ready-made boundary. The third has been so thoroughly absorbed into a later sheep-pen that only probable ruins remain beneath it. The fourth is the most substantial: circular, corbelled, with walls around 1.6 metres thick and standing two metres high, its interior diameter just over three metres. The site was recorded in detail by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey, published under the title Corca Dhuibhne, though no precise date of construction is given for any of the structures. The Garfinny valley lies on the Dingle Peninsula, a landscape already dense with early medieval and prehistoric remains, and these huts fit quietly into that longer pattern of seasonal or pastoral use of the upland slopes.
