Graveslab, Ardfert, Co. Kerry

Inside the church of the Franciscan friary at Ardfert, nine limestone grave slabs lie flat in the floor, walked past and occasionally walked over by anyone who enters.

They carry no confirmed date, no legible inscription that has been pinned to a known individual, and no certain attribution to any particular century. What they are, plainly, is a collection of burial markers whose origins remain unresolved, set into the ground of a building that has itself been standing in various states of use and ruin for several hundred years.

The friary at Ardfert was a Franciscan foundation in north Kerry, a county where medieval ecclesiastical remains cluster with unusual density. The nine slabs, all limestone, form part of the floor of the friary church and are recorded together as a group of monuments, each catalogued separately but understood as a related collection. Limestone was the practical choice for funerary carving across much of Ireland during the medieval and post-medieval periods, durable enough to survive underfoot but susceptible over time to wear that can erase whatever decoration or lettering a slab once carried. That the date of these particular examples remains undetermined is not unusual for floor slabs in a well-trafficked ecclesiastical building; surfaces erode, records are lost, and the people commemorated slip out of the documentary record entirely.
