Promontory fort – coastal, Long Island, Co. Kerry

At the western tip of Long Island off the Kerry coast, two shallow parallel ditches and a slight bank cut across the land, separating a small area of the island from the rest.

It is a modest arrangement, easy to miss, and nobody is entirely certain what it represents. The features were recorded in 2003 but had not at that point been examined on the ground, leaving open the question of whether this was ever a promontory fort at all.

A promontory fort typically uses natural topography to its advantage, placing a bank or series of banks and ditches across the neck of a headland so that the sea provides defence on the remaining sides. The form is found all around the Irish coastline and dates most commonly to the Iron Age, though some examples were used or modified in later periods. On Long Island, however, the visible remains are considered likely too slight to have served that defended function. The low-lying character of the western end of the island is probably part of the explanation; centuries of erosion on exposed coastal ground can reduce substantial earthworks to faint undulations. Whatever the original scale, what survives now is ambiguous. At the opposite end of the island, a burial ground sits within a circular enclosure, a separate feature that adds to the sense of Long Island as a place with a longer human story than its present quiet appearance might suggest.
