Stone Monuments
Near Staigue in County Kerry, not far from one of Ireland's most celebrated dry-stone ring forts, a standing stone occupies the landscape with the quiet insistence that these monuments tend to have.
Standing stones, large upright slabs or pillars set into the ground by prehistoric peoples, are scattered across Ireland in their thousands, yet each one raises the same unanswerable questions about purpose: boundary marker, ritual site, memorial, astronomical indicator, or something else entirely. This one, in a part of Kerry already dense with prehistoric and early medieval remains, is the kind of detail that rewards those who look beyond the obvious attraction nearby.
