At Moatavanny in County Kildare, a small natural hillock once served a purpose its geology never intended. Steep-sided and compact, the mound measures roughly forty metres across at its base, narrowing to a summit of about twenty metres, and at some point in the early medieval period somebody looked at this ready-made elevation and decided it was worth fortifying. What they built was a platform-type ringfort, a form of settlement in which the enclosed living area sits raised above the surrounding ground on a natural or artificially heightened base rather than being defined purely by enclosing earthen banks. The result would have been a small but commanding domestic site, visible across the flat Kildare landscape.

The ringfort, or rath, was the characteristic farmstead of early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular enclosed area defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but the one at Moatavanny has fared worse than most. Quarrying has removed the greater part of the structure, leaving only a remnant of what the adapted hillock once looked like. What made it archaeologically interesting, the combination of natural topography repurposed as a defended or elevated settlement platform, is now mostly gone, the stone or material of the mound extracted for some later practical use with little regard for what was being lost.
