House – indeterminate date, Parsonstown, Co. Kildare

In a field at Parsonstown in County Kildare, a slight grassy square barely announces itself above the surrounding ground. What makes it worth pausing over is less what it looks like now and more what it might once have been: the remains of a house, its walls long since dissolved into the earth, leaving only a low scarp, between 0.4 and 0.6 metres high, tracing a roughly seven-metre square on the ground.

The feature sits in the northern sector of what is classified as a multivallate enclosure, meaning a site enclosed by multiple banks or ditches rather than just one. Such enclosures are a recurring feature of the Irish landscape and could have served a range of purposes across different periods, from settlement to stock management to ceremonial use. The precise date of the possible house remains unresolved. The earthen platform it has left behind is square in plan, an unusual shape in early Irish domestic architecture, where circular or sub-circular forms were more common. That squareness may itself hint at something, though without excavation any reading of it remains speculative.
